TIME TO SAY GOOD-BYE
GOOD-BYE MISS HOLLAND
Thursday April 23 We will have a grand send off for our GVSU student Miss Tracey Holland. She has been a wonderful addition to our class this semester. Her actual college graduation is Friday evening. The students are excited, but sad to see her time in our class come to an end. She will be able to come with the class on our trip to Meijer Gardens. She will also be a guest teacher as needed in our school. I will post pictures of the events next Thursday.

THE SECOND CELEBRATION OF WRITING
The Second Celebration of Writing
The children presented one of the many writings they completed since our first celebration. Each student had 'fancied' up the piece with a cover, detailed picture, and a dedication page. The Writing Studio had a place of honor for each writer while reading the selected writing. Here are pictures from the Celebration.

Mrs. Reyburn started the Celebration by reading several of her own personal pieces of writing.

Pencil to Portfolio
Electronic Portfolio
The students are working in the Portfolio to enter pictures of work and events in second grade. They have one half-hour block each week to work in the media lab with direct teacher instruction for finding, then inserting pictures into the proper place in the Portfolio. This week each child entered a picture in the community section of the Portfolio with Mrs. Phillip during their media class. The community section of the Portfolio also has International Aid pictures from our visit there. This week we took pictures during the visit of Mrs. Buchannan, who taught the class the history of the resorts of the Tri-Cities. The students will add the information they learned about the history of resorts in Grand Haven area under each picture.

Children's Thoughts
QUILTING FOR CLEAN WATER
Thursday, December 4, was the day the students designed the quilt square for our International Aid quilt. Mrs. Sipe instructed the children in the use of fabric crayons. She demonstrated the variety of patterns used as the basis of the design. The students worked very hard to make a lovely nautical themed design on the 12x12 cloth square. These squares will be on display at International Aid during the arts and craft show this weekend. You can bid on the quilt. It could be yours. Added information is in the flyer included in the report card envelope. All of the money raised will be donated for the water filters.
FIELD TRIP
The class visited the International Aid head quarters here in Spring Lake. The trip brought an awareness to the children for the needs of others around the world. Here are some of their thoughts in the form of thank you letters to International Aid:
Dear International Aid,
Gavin:
Thank you for teaching me about the world. How do you get the boxes to different countries?
Logan:
Thank you for letting us come. I liked your stuff. We want one of your filters for the poor so they can have a good life. ( Those forklifters were cool.)
Robbie:
Thank you! For letting us come. The new filter was very interesting.
Theo:
Thanks for showing all your awesome stuff. It was really, really cool. I liked it. That was a really cool filter and quilts. It's like a wonder land. Thanks very, very much.
Kaitlynn:
Thank you for letting us come. My favorite thing is the lab in the suitcase.
Maria:
How can I help you? I love the part that you help other people. Thank you Mrs. Null and Mrs. Fish.
Isabel:
I didn't know people could get sick from smoke and I didn't know sand can make clean water. I liked the quilt. I want to go there again.
Jon:
I want to be just like you and clean out the water.
Matthew:
I like everything you have. It was cool. I like the hospital beds. I like the fork lifts, too. I like the water filters. I like the foam kind of foam, but it is curly. Thank you for the trip.
Giovana:
How do you know how to sew so good. It probably takes a lot of practice. I really want to know how to sew so I can help kids around the world, people who need quilts. Thank you for everything. The field trip was great.

On Our Way
NEW MATH COMPUTER PROGRAM
The Symphony Math program has been installed on the school computers. This program helps students understand the number and language basics of our base ten number system.Every child will practice math for 30 minutes three times per week using this program. The program will automatically track each student, raise levels and give us reports on the student's progress. We will especially tract the student's progress in faster recall of facts. Soon this program will be accessable from your home computer throught the school site.
Welcome to our class blog!
This is a first for Mrs. Reyburn's Second Grade. I hope you find the information helpful to you and your student. Coming soon.... pictures in our BLOG.
SPELLING
Every Friday is the spelling test. Keep working to learn all of the words.
READ AT HOME
Most of the children are reading a book at home every night. Some of the books are quite long so it takes more than one night to read them. This Reading at Home has resulted in big growth in reading fluency for all the children.+
MUSIC
Mrs. White had all of the children deep in concentration with both motions and song in sequence. I came in at the end of the class for a demonstration of their sequential learning. I was impressed!
Michigan Model Health: Our lessons begin with understanding our feelings. The children are learning to recognize their feelings and discussing ways of dealing with feelings appropriately. The children are learning to express feelings respectfully. Look for the parent letter in the backpack with a family connection to help you at home.
